EXPERIMENTING SURVEYING TECHNIQUES

PREPARATION FOR STUDIO WORKS

It is very important to take the measurements of the existing structures before you begin to draw and design. Usually, it is not easy to find the as-built drawings of the buildings. If there are no as-built drawings, then surveying of the building that you are going to design, becomes necessary. Since Interior Architects deal with details more often, correctness of the measurements are very crucial especially when designing built-in furniture. You should survey the space, carefully, draw sketches proportionally and take notes and write related measurements precisely where necessary so that you can easily see them later when you begin to draw them technically.

You have leamed the special techniques about surveying during the lecture, given by Dr. Fuat Gokce. With the information provided, now, you are asked to work in groups of three to experience these techniques, when applying for the given space

The given space is located at basement level. It is located at the left side of the FFB-05 lecture room and used as foyer. It has three-twin, one single columns and four doors; one for the lecture room, one for the storage room, one for air conditioning room (FFB0 4) and the last one is for the kitchen, which has a window looking to the foyer. Kitchen is also a part of this exercise.

Sketches should be drawn free hand on A4 size white opaque paper and are required to be as follows:

1- A sketch plan of the space including the kitchen. All related dimensions should be written on that sketch plan clearly in accordance with the surveying techniques. Do not forget the location of columns.

2- 5 interior elevations of the given space, indicating all the openings, switches, window(s), door(s), radiators

3- A photocopy of sketch plan of the given space should show ceiling treatments with dash lines and related dimensions.

You are asked to bring them next week to take the critiques. Final submission of these sketches will be the following week, on 26th and 27th of November. Since your next four studio sessions are based on these drawings, you should take copies of surveying sketches before submission in order to continue working with them during the studio hours.

We hope, you to enjoy your task as a group.
